“Wash N Go... But Do You Really Just ‘Go’?!”

Updated: Dec 13, 2021

What is a Wash and Go?

A wash and go is a protective styling method that:

· Cleanses

· Deep conditions

· Styles

It usually involves washing and styling your hair without heat, protective styling, or any manipulation. Most people will still do their full moisturising regime by way of the LOC or LCO method.

The LOC and/or LCO method is a moisturising technique that uses liquid, oil and cream. This is then followed up by a styling product such as a gel or curling cream/custard to help define the curls and coils.

Why is it a great protective style?

It is a great protective style as it seals in moisture and requires minimal to no manipulation.

Here are FOUR reasons how this style protects your natural hair:

· Doesn’t require excessive brushing or combing that can make hair weaker

· Protects hair from breakage, splitting, and dryness

· A protective barrier is created on your hair by the gel or curling cream/custard that is used

· Keeps hair and ends moisturised

How do you achieve this style?

1) Start with freshly washed and deep conditioned hair

2) Section your hair into four sections

3) Create a part at the front section for additional styling (this can be a middle, side or deep side part)

4) Start at the back and detangle the first section

5) Do the LOC or LCO method (add leave in conditioner, oil and cream) to this first section

6) Repeat for the remaining sections of your hair

7) Go back to the back sections of your hair

8) Separate the first section of your hair at the back into smaller sections (depending on the thickness of your hair)

9) Smooth on the styling product (gel or curling cream/custard) from the roots to the ends with your fingers (ensure all the strands are covered with the product)

10) Use your fingers (or a Denman brush/wide tooth comb) to detangle and help define curls and coils

11) Add the styling product (gel or curling cream/custard) to the remaining sections of your hair so all sections have been covered including the front

12) Use a clip to keep your part separated whilst your hair dries

13) Let this air dry until fully dried

14) You can also use a hairdryer to help speed up the process

15) If doing this in the evening ensure to cover your hair with a bonnet (try and let air dry as much as possible before doing so)

How do you maintain this style?

This style is very easy to maintain and requires minimal effort hence the name ‘Wash and Go’.

1) Cover your hair at night with a satin bonnet, wrap or scarf

2) Keep your hair and scalp moisturised

throughout the week using an oil or water (do not over wet with a spray bottle as this will cause the curls and coil to revert)

3) Leave your curls and coils alone as touching them will cause separation and frizz

4) Freshen up any frizz with styling products such as gel or curling cream/custard

5) Restyle into a updo, half up half down or another style

6) Keep them edges LAID as the style grows out

How long does the style last?

A wash and go averagely lasts one week however this do depend on the hair type and the maintenance of the wash and go.

If the wash and go is not properly maintained or the hair type is finer then the curls and coils might only last up to 3 days.

A wash and go could be stretched to up to 10-14 days if properly maintained however it would be best to leave this style in no more than one week (7 days)
